The first wood sculpture/carving that I did was a small - 2 inch by 1.5 inch - duck. I did it about 7-8 times before I stopped inadvertently cutting off the head at the end because I was too heavy handed with the knife. There is a lot to know about sculpting but I think one of the most important is to know the precise pressure and angle to hold and make cuts.
